How to Job Search Effectively?
Let’s face it, in this economy, it is a realistic fear of many people that they will wind up out of work. The question then becomes, “What do I do now?”
For many, searching for a job is as simple as pulling out the newspaper and pouring through the Classified section. However, in this day and age, pouring through the Classifieds is akin to driving a Flintstone car.
The internet has changed so much of our daily existence, including job searching. If you do a search for “job search” you will come up with a plethora of sites that might just overwhelm you enough to crawl back under the covers and job search tomorrow.
The trick to searching for a job in today’s world is to know where to look online to find a job. Search engines, job sites and other online classifieds open doors more quickly, with wider range and in more detail than any newspaper Classified section can offer.
Step 1
Dig deep! Everyone knows the economy is struggling. Many people are just trying to get by the best they can. Please don’t let a few dollars dictate whether you leave a good tip or not. People who work in industries where they earn tips don’t get paid a very big base wage. In fact, most of the time, they get Minimum Wage plus their tips. The fact is, they generally pay the majority of their bills with their tip money. So, reach into your wallet and pull out those few dollars because that person who is serving you is paying for diapers, milk, electricity, and gas (not to mention many other things) with that money.
Step 2
Is she working hard? It used to be that leaving a 10% tip was considered an appropriate tip. Nowadays, though, things are so expensive that 10% really doesn’t cover much at all. In fact, if you have someone who is busting their butts to serve you, and you leave 10%, it’s not only disappointing but also insulting to their effort. Look around you … are they busy? Are they attending to a lot of other customers? Are there problems outside of their control? Are they trying their best? Have they gone out of their way to make sure your drinks stay full? Cleared your plates? Made sure that steak is cooked exactly like you asked? All of these things need to be considered when leaving a tip. So, the first rule is 10% is a thing of the past.
Step 3
Thank you! A good tip nowadays is 15% - 25%. Does that sound shocking to you? Your server needs that money too and works hard to do their job. When I was waiting on tables, my feet and hands would ache horribly after a shift. My back would hurt and my legs felt like they were on fire. But, I had to support myself and my family. And, good people like you tipped me well enough to do so. Please remember that your server is a person with a family and to tip them appropriately. I wish you the best of luck!
